I found a number of different lessons I would like to try in my classroom. This year I will be substituting for the first grade teacher in our building while she is on maternity leave. I would like to incorporate digital cameras with our study of jobs people do in the community using "Kodak's Camera and Careers" lesson as a model.

In the beginning of the project, I would explain to the children that we would be taking pictures using the digital camera. We would practice camera basics using the camera. I believe I would have access to at least five digital cameras and could probably borrow some cameras from the upper school technology department if I needed extra cameras.

Since the project requires students to take pictures outside of school, I would send home a note, prior to our study, inquiring which families have a digital camera and color printer along with a brief explanation of the project. The first grade class will have 14-16 students this year and I believe most of the children would have access to a digital camera at home. Those students who do not, could take home the school cameras.

I would begin with a week long study of various careers. This would include reading stories and inviting some quest speakers to visit. Parents and other family members would be included in our list of quest speakers. Also at the beginning of the week, I would send home an instruction sheet and a digital camera (for those who do not have access to a digital camera). Children would photograph a family member at his/her workplace (4-5 pictures). Photographs would focus on workplace environment, equipment used, services provided and school subjects utilized in this field.

Students would have a week to complete the photograph portion of the project. (I would also have a backup plan for anyone who was unable to photograph a family member at his/her workplace. They could photograph a worker in our school).

The second week of the project, the children would return the pictures, cameras or memory cards to school so we could print all pictures from the returned cameras and memory cards. The children would then begin writing captions to the photographs that they have brought in. I might send home some pictures for homework this week for those who need extra time. After all the pictures have been written about, I would bind each child's book and then the children could share their books with their friends.

An extension to this project could be a Career Day Celebration where children dress up and the day's activities involve reading our career projects, role playing various occupations during center time, story writing, songs etc.
